Choosing your College – Factors you Should Consider When Making your Choice
There are thousands of colleges to choose from, so how do you choose which one is right for you? The truth of the matter is that colleges and universities have a lot more in common than they have differences. When it comes down to making a decision on where you will spend the 4 or so years of your life studying, it really comes down to where you will feel the most comfortable. Colleges and universities do not specialize in particular subjects, so as long as a college offers the major you are interested in, then it can be considered as an option.
So if all of the colleges are pretty much the same then what factors should you take into consideration?
You should choose your college or university based on the things that are important to you. Some things that you may want to consider or take the time to think about are:
• What size college/university and classes do you feel most comfortable with?
Some people feel more comfortable in a more close-knit community and learn better in a smaller class environment. If you feel this way then you may want consider smaller private colleges. Others feel more comfortable in a big city and don’t mind large classes and/or a large campus with a large number of students. If you are one of these people, then you may feel more comfortable at a larger college or university, maybe one that is located in a big city.
• In what geographic location would you like to attend school?
There are colleges and universities all over the country. Since you have to live and interact in the environment and location that the college is located, you may want to consider geographic location and the weather. Maybe you would like to choose a college that is relatively close to where your family lives. Adversely, you may wish to choose a college or university that is not located near your family. Weather conditions are another thing that you should take into consideration. If you hate the snow and cold weather, you may not be happy at a school that is located in the northeast or the Midwest where snow and cold weather are common occurrences. Keep in mind that you will be living at undergraduate school for a 4 year period, maybe longer if you go on to grad school, etc. Pick somewhere where you feel like you fit and can live for the next few years of your life.

Repositioning Gender Parity in Education: Assessing the participation of girls in secondary school education in Uganda
Historical Background
Secondary school education has a long history in Uganda. Mission schools were established in the 1890s, and in 1924 the government opened the first secondary school for Africans. However, by 1950, the government operated only three secondary schools; three others were privately funded, and 47 were operated by religious organizations. After independence in 1962, many villages, especially in the south, built schools, hired teachers, and appealed for, and received, government assistance to operate their own schools. Although over the years, the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) has provided increased assistance to covering secondary school costs in an attempt to increase opportunities for participation, overall participation and particularly for girls is still inadequate, and varies in nature and degree from one region or community to another. Yet, educating girls is among the most important investments a country can make to promote long-term social and economic development. The participation of girls in secondary education is beneficial at the individual, family, community and national levels. Benefits include opportunities for a University education, improved health status of the children at the family level, increased employment opportunities, increased ability to engage in gainful livelihood interventions.
However, access and participation in secondary school education is still a challenge for many students in Uganda especially girls. There still exist significant variations between locations, within sub counties, across income groups as well as religions. Such differences are clearly highlighted in the USAID-supported school mapping exercise that was conducted in 2005 referred to in the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (2007). Most notably, girl’s completion rates are still very low in most third world countries. The transition rates from primary to secondary school has never gone beyond fifty percent and notes that although 80 percent of all pupils who sit exams pass, only fifty percent get places at secondary or technical schools.

Why Online Education Is Growing
Distance education of one sort or another has been around for a long time. Correspondence courses helped people learn trades on their own free time, while radio or taped television courses educated students in remote areas. Now, with the rapid expansion and evolution of the Internet, online education has become a reality. 3.9 million students were taking at least one online course during Fall 2007, a growth rate of 12% on the previous year;
This growth rate is much faster than the overall higher education growth rate of 1.2%.
Higher Education: Meeting The Need For A Skilled Workforce
Higher education in general has grown greatly. Census data shows that in 1980, only 32% of US adults under 25 had earned a degree or completed any college coursework. By 2000, this number had jumped to 52%. Prosperity has played a role in this growth: as median incomes have risen over the past several decades, more people have been able to afford to send their children to college. Political support for putting people into college education, via Federal funding such as Pell Grants and loans, has also helped increase access to higher education.

The role of distance education in Puerto Rico must be one which promotes proactive integration with Student – student and Teacher with students in a completely professional.

This paper presents some ideas which aim to place the teacher in the context of a distance education model and understand what their role and responsibility in student learning and success of an educational program.
Elements of the process of distance education
Distance education models are based on three elements:
a. educational materials
b. advice or guidance of a teacher or specialist in the field
c. evaluation as a means of accreditation.
These elements are complemented by administrative infrastructure, management systems, university centers, information sources, among others, which are integrated into a teaching model as a complete and complex system of relationships designed to fulfill one goal: to educate. The actors in this process are the teachers, students and the institution sponsoring the program, we have an educational process comprising the universe of relationships that may arise between the actors and model components.
The teacher is responsible for conducting the process, tracing the lines of learning that must follow the student and provide necessary educational resources, their work is reflected through the development of materials and advice, their participation is vital because of its correct performance depends on the success of the program, either in terms of assimilation of content, as attrition rates, student satisfaction and approval.
The student is the center of the educational model, it is routed to all actions and efforts of teachers and the institution. At a distance model is necessary to be clear that the student is the protagonist of his own background, is he who, through effort and perseverance in reaching goals that will mean their whole degree. The formative nature of self-care educational materials, implicitly, the work of the student learning is largely autonomous and self-regulating.
